Belgium Unemployment: The 2026 Transition Waves Explained

9 August 2026

If you were already receiving Belgian unemployment or insertion benefits before 1 March 2026, the reform we covered separately doesn’t apply to you directly. You fall under a separate transitional system instead, one that phases out benefits across six categories based on your situation as of 30 June 2025. By August 2026, several of those deadlines have already passed, and others are running right now. Here’s how the framework actually works.

This isn’t the same calculator

Worth saying clearly up front: the unemployment benefit calculator on this site estimates benefits under the new rules, for entitlements that started on or after 1 March 2026. If you were already on unemployment before that date, you’re not covered by that calculation, your situation runs on the separate transitional timeline described below instead.

The six categories, and when each one ends

ONEM measures everyone’s transitional situation from a fixed reference date, 1 July 2025, then applies a different countdown depending on which compensation period you were in and how long you’d accumulated unemployment.

CategoryWho it coversBenefits end
Third period, 20+ years20 years or more of cumulated unemployment1 January 2026
Third period, 8 to 20 yearsBetween 8 and 20 years of cumulated unemployment1 March 2026
Third period, under 8 yearsUnder 8 years of cumulated unemployment1 April 2026
Second periodAny career length, in the second compensation period1 July 2026
First period, career under 5 yearsCareer under 5 years1 July 2025, plus 12 months, plus 1 extra month per 4 months worked
First period, career 5 years or moreCareer of 5 years or more1 July 2027

By August 2026, the first three categories are already behind us. The one that just closed is the second-period category, on 1 July 2026. The two remaining categories, first period with a short or a long career, are the ones still actively running out or furthest away.

Who isn’t affected by the time limit at all

A few situations are excluded from this time limitation entirely:

  • You’re 55 or older with a sufficient work history
  • You’re in the RCC system (the former “prépension”)
  • You work in a specific protected sector: ports, sea fishing, or protected workshops

One thing that can push your date back

ONEM notes that an end-of-entitlement date can be deferred by up to 12 months in certain circumstances. That’s worth actively checking, not something to assume applies automatically.

Find your exact date

This article describes the general framework, not your individual file. ONEM sends a written notification ahead of each cutoff, and your own exact end date depends on your personal situation. If you’re unsure where you stand, check the notification you received, or ask your union or the CAPAC directly, they can confirm your specific date faster than any general explanation can.
