Salary & employment in Belgium

From your first paycheck to the end of a contract, your working life runs on precise calculations. Here are the free tools to estimate what you earn, what you keep, and your rights, based on the official Belgian 2026 scales.

Understanding your pay

In Belgium, the gross salary in your contract is never what you actually receive. Two deductions reduce it: the NSSO social security contribution (13.07% of gross, funding social security) and the withholding tax, deducted monthly according to a progressive scale and your family situation. The result is your net salary, which other elements (work bonus, 13th month, meal vouchers, municipal surcharges) can still affect.

Your rights at the end of a contract

When a contract ends, the notice period depends on your seniority and on who terminates the contract. Blue-collar and white-collar workers follow the same rules since the unified status: notice is counted in weeks, longer for dismissal than for resignation. The employer can also terminate immediately by paying an equivalent severance indemnity.

If you lose your job, unemployment benefit takes over, but the reform of 1 March 2026 changed it profoundly: a decreasing amount and a duration now capped at 24 months.

Day to day: your travel expenses

If you use your own car for work, your business kilometres can be reimbursed at the official tax-free rate. A good habit so you leave nothing on the table each month.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate my net salary from the gross?

First the 13.07% NSSO social security contribution is deducted from the gross, then the withholding tax computed in progressive brackets according to your family situation. Our gross → net salary calculator does the maths using the official key formula of the Belgian FPS Finance.

What is my notice period?

Since the unified status (2014), notice is counted in weeks and grows with seniority: it is longer in case of dismissal than resignation (capped at 13 weeks). The notice period calculator gives the exact duration for your seniority.

How long can I receive unemployment benefit in 2026?

Since the reform of 1 March 2026, full unemployment is limited to 24 months (12 base months + up to 12 depending on your work history), with a decreasing amount (65% then 60% of your last capped salary). The unemployment benefit calculator estimates amount and duration.

How are business trips reimbursed?

Per kilometre, up to an official amount exempt from tax and contributions (€0.4449/km for 2025-2026). The mileage allowance calculator generates your expense report.
