Three regions, three separate systems
Since the 6th state reform, each Belgian region manages its own family benefits, with its own amounts and its own rules. This calculator estimates the base amount your family is entitled to, based on your region and your children's ages.
1. Wallonia (FAMIWAL)
For a child born from January 1, 2020, the base amount is €196.57 per month from age 0 to 17, then €209.25 from 18 to 24, with no distinction by birth rank. For a child born before that date, the amount depends on rank: €121.50 (1st child), €224.82 (2nd), €335.66 (3rd and beyond), excluding age supplements, not modeled here.
2. Brussels (Iriscare)
For a child born from December 1, 2019, the base amount increases by age bracket (0-11, 12-17, 18-24), with a higher amount for 18-24 year-olds enrolled in higher education. For a child born before that date, the same age-based structure applies, with slightly lower amounts (€177.55 to €202.91 depending on age).
One Brussels exception is worth knowing: if your household’s annual income reaches €40,586.52 and the child receives no supplement (social, orphan or disability), the base amount does not increase with age — it stays at the 0-11 level, which is €12.68/month less for a child aged 12 to 17 and €25.36/month less for a higher-education student. The calculator asks both questions as soon as the situation can arise, that is, in Brussels with a child aged 12 or over.
3. Flanders (Groeipakket)
For a child born from January 1, 2019, the base amount is fixed (€184.62/month), identical for every child regardless of age or rank. For a child born before that date, the amount depends on rank: €106.27 (1st), €196.64 (2nd), €265.87 (3rd and beyond), excluding age supplements (leeftijdsbijslag), not modeled here. Note that Flanders fixes this rank on the household composition as at 31 December 2018, whereas Wallonia bases it on the children still receiving benefits today.
What this calculator does not cover
Only the base amount is estimated, for both the current and pre-reform systems. The income-tested social supplement, the orphan supplement, the disability supplement, single-parent or large-family supplements, and the birth or adoption premium are not modeled. For children born before the reform in Wallonia and Flanders, age supplements (which significantly increase the amount for older children under the old system) are also not included, your actual amount may therefore be noticeably higher than the estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the amount depend on my region?
Since 2019-2020, family benefits are a fully regional competence in Belgium. Wallonia (FAMIWAL), Brussels (Iriscare) and Flanders (Groeipakket) each apply their own scale, separate from the former federal system.
Does the amount depend on the child’s birth rank (1st, 2nd, 3rd...)?
For a child born after the regional reform: no, in Wallonia and Brussels the amount depends only on age, and in Flanders it is identical for every child. For a child born before the reform, in Wallonia and Flanders the amount does depend on rank, check "Born before the reform" in the calculator to indicate this.
Does this apply to all my children?
Yes: the calculator covers both children born since the regional reform (Wallonia ≥ January 1, 2020, Brussels ≥ December 1, 2019, Flanders ≥ January 1, 2019) and those born before, via the "Born before the reform" checkbox. For the latter, in Wallonia and Flanders, also specify their rank.
How do I determine the rank of a child born before the reform?
The rule differs by region. In Wallonia, the rank is the child’s position among the household’s children who still receive benefits today, not their birth order: a child who becomes the 1st beneficiary because older siblings have aged out counts as rank 1, even if not the eldest. In Flanders, by contrast, the rank is fixed on the household composition as at 31 December 2018 and does not change afterwards.
What is the social supplement?
On top of the base amount, families whose income is below certain thresholds are entitled to a supplement, which can add several dozen euros per child per month. This calculator does not model it: only the base amount is shown.
Are there other supplements not included?
Yes: orphan supplement, supplement for a child with a disability or medical condition, single-parent or large-family supplements (Wallonia), and the birth or adoption premium (a one-time amount). None of these are included here.
Until what age are you entitled to family benefits?
In principle unconditionally until age 18, and up to 24-25 if the child is still studying or in certain specific situations (integration internship, apprenticeship...). This calculator applies a 24-year cap but does not verify study conditions beyond age 18.
