How the Belgian student job scheme works

Student worker status comes with a favourable social security regime: a reduced solidarity contribution instead of ordinary contributions, within an annual hours quota. This calculator estimates your net pay and shows where you stand against the two tax thresholds that determine whether you owe tax and whether you remain a tax dependent of your parents.

1. The solidarity contribution (2.71%)

On the first 650 hours worked in the year (across all employers), you only pay 2.71% personal contribution, versus 13.07% for an ordinary employee. Beyond that quota, ordinary contributions apply to the extra hours.

2. The 650-hour quota, per calendar year

The counter resets every 1 January. You're not required to use it in full, and you can work more than 650 hours if you wish, but the extra hours then fall under ordinary contributions, and withholding tax may apply.

3. Two tax thresholds to know

  • €15,971.43 (2026): below this, you pay no tax on your student job (if it's your only income and you don't claim actual expenses).
  • €22,385 (2026): below this, you remain a tax dependent of your parents, above it, they lose the corresponding tax benefit.

What this calculator does not cover

Child benefits follow separate hour limits that differ by region (Wallonia, Brussels, Flanders, German-speaking Community), not modelled here. Withholding tax potentially due beyond the 650-hour quota isn't estimated either, a marginal case that depends on your full situation. For your ordinary salary outside the student job, see Gross → net salary.

Frequently asked questions

What social contribution applies to a student job?

A reduced solidarity contribution of 2.71% (instead of the ordinary 13.07%) applies to the first 650 hours worked in the year. Beyond that, ordinary social security contributions apply to the extra hours.

What is the 650-hour quota?

Since 1 January 2025, every student has an annual quota of 650 hours per calendar year during which the reduced contribution applies, across all employers combined. The counter resets every 1 January, unused hours do not carry over.

Do I have to pay withholding tax on my student pay?

No, as long as: you have a written student employment contract, you don't work more than 650 hours a year, and only the solidarity contribution is due on your income. If any of these conditions is no longer met, withholding tax may be deducted.

From what amount do I have to pay income tax?

If your student job is your only source of income and you don't claim actual (non-flat-rate) professional expenses, you pay no tax as long as your taxable gross amount doesn't exceed €15,971.43 in 2026.

From what amount do my parents lose the tax benefit?

Under the same conditions (no other income, no actual expenses claimed), you remain a tax dependent of your parents as long as your taxable gross doesn't exceed €22,385 in 2026. Above that, your parents lose the corresponding tax benefit.

Do I still need to file a tax return?

Yes. From age 18, filing is mandatory even if your income is well below the tax threshold, and it's often worthwhile: if your employer wrongly withheld tax, filing a return lets you recover it.

Does this affect child benefits (family allowance)?

Yes, but under separate hour limits that differ by region (Wallonia, Flanders, Brussels, German-speaking Community), not calculated by this tool. Check with your family allowance fund to confirm your situation.

I work temp jobs for several employers, how do I track my quota?

The 650-hour quota is national and cumulative, not per employer or contract: every hour worked for any employer (temp agencies included) counts toward the same counter. Just add up all your hours for the year in the "hours already worked" field, your exact, up-to-date balance remains available on Student@work, which centralizes the declarations from all your employers.
