Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to an amount?
Multiply the amount excluding VAT by (1 + rate). For example, at 21%: €100 excl. VAT × 1.21 = €121 including VAT.
How do I remove VAT from an amount?
Divide the amount including VAT by (1 + rate). At 21%: €121 incl. VAT ÷ 1.21 = €100 excluding VAT.
What are the Belgian VAT rates?
Four rates: 21% (standard, most goods and services), 12% (special cases, part of hospitality), 6% (basic necessities, certain building works) and 0% (exempt transactions).
What is the difference between excl. VAT, VAT and incl. VAT?
The amount excluding VAT is the price before tax; VAT is the tax added; the amount including VAT is the final price actually paid, VAT included.
Must I always charge VAT?
No: some regimes (small business exemption, reverse charge, intra-community supply, export) do not require charging VAT. See our invoice generator for the full details of these regimes.
