Two separate taxes on your investments

A Belgian individual investor is subject to two different levies: the stock exchange tax (TOB), due on every purchase and sale of securities, and the withholding tax, deducted from dividends and interest received.

A cost that counts as a round trip

The tax applies separately at purchase and at resale of the same security. An investor who only looks at the purchase cost underestimates their real cost by half: this calculator always shows the total of both operations.

What this calculator does not do

It is limited to the two most common cases for an individual investing through a standard European broker (classic shares/bonds, FSMA/EEA-listed ETFs). It does not calculate the Reynders tax, nor non-listed SICAVs, funds not listed on FSMA/EEA, or regulated real estate companies.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the stock exchange tax always calculated as a round trip?

The stock exchange tax (TOB) applies separately at purchase AND at sale. A calculation limited to one direction would underestimate the real cost by half for an investor who eventually sells, which is why this tool always shows the cost of both operations.

What happens if my transaction amount exceeds the cap?

The tax is capped per transaction (€1,300, €1,600 or €4,000 depending on the security category). Beyond the corresponding transaction amount, the tax due no longer increases proportionally, it stays capped.

How do I know if my ETF matches the "standard" case covered here?

If your ETF is listed on Euronext, Xetra or another European exchange and carries a European UCITS label, you are almost certainly in the standard case covered here. If in doubt (non-listed SICAV, fund outside the EU/EEA), check your fund's prospectus or ask your broker, the rate may differ.

Why don't you calculate the Reynders tax?

The Reynders tax (30% withholding tax on the bond component of mixed or bond funds invested at least 10% in bonds) depends on the exact composition of the fund at a given time, a figure you cannot know yourself. It is calculated by your bank or the fund manager; check your fund's key information document (KIID/PRIIPs) for this.

Is the €833 threshold the same as my savings account or the capital gains tax?

No, these are three separate thresholds that do not combine: €833 for the exemption on share dividends, €1,020/€2,040 for regulated savings, and €10,000 for the tax on financial capital gains. See the summary below.
