Child benefits in Belgium 2026: what you actually receive, region by region
22 August 2026
Most people search “how much are child benefits in Belgium in 2026”, land on a single figure, and stop there. That’s a shame, because that single figure doesn’t exist. Between Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels, between a low-income family and a well-off one, the gap can exceed €100 per child per month for exactly the same child of the same age. Here is how your amount is really built, with the figures in force in 2026 and the traps families discover after the fact.
The base amount, region by region
Since regionalisation, each region pays its own benefits. For a child under the current system (born after the regional switch dates), the 2026 monthly base amounts are:
| Region | Child aged 0-11 | 12-17 | 18-24 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wallonia (FAMIWAL) | €196.57 | €196.57 | €209.25 |
| Brussels (Iriscare/Famiris) | €190.23 | €202.91 | €202.91 (€215.59 in higher education) |
| Flanders (Groeipakket) | €184.62 | €184.62 | €184.62 |
Sources: public scales from FAMIWAL, Famiris and Groeipakket, indexed amounts in force as of July 2026. In Brussels, amounts were indexed on 1 March 2026.
Three things stand out. Flanders pays less in base but compensates differently, more on that below. Brussels is the only region where the amount rises with the child’s age, but only up to a certain household income, and that’s where it gets twisted. And Wallonia is the only one where the amount jumps noticeably at 18.
If you want the exact amount for the age and region of YOUR children, our child benefit calculator also handles children born before the regional reform, where birth rank changes everything.
The social supplement: where everything is decided
The base amount is a floor, not a ceiling. If your household income sits under certain thresholds, a supplement is added per child per month, and it often outweighs the difference between regions.
The 2026 annual gross household income ceilings:
| Region | Low bracket | Middle bracket |
|---|---|---|
| Wallonia | ≤ €34,453.81 | ≤ €55,599.36 |
| Brussels | ≤ €40,586.52 | ≤ €58,915.92 |
| Flanders | ≤ €40,701.59 | ≤ €47,485.19 (1-2 children) or ≤ €76,560.64 (3+ children) |
And the amounts added, for a child under the current system:
| Region | Low bracket | Middle bracket |
|---|---|---|
| Wallonia | + €69.75 | + €31.71 |
| Flanders (1-2 children) | + €73.68 | + €37.31 |
| Flanders (3+ children) | + €108.29 | + €85.22 |
Brussels works differently: the supplement depends on family size, the child’s age and single-parent status. A single parent in the low bracket with a child under 12 gets + €50.73; with three children, + €164.87 for the third. A detail that surprises many: in the Brussels middle bracket, a single child opens no entitlement at all (€0), you need at least two.
Three families, three very different amounts
Concrete cases, all computed with the 2026 scales.
A typical Walloon family, two children (4 and 13), middle income. Base: €196.57 × 2 = €393.14. Middle-bracket supplement: €31.71 × 2. Total: €456.56 per month.
A single mother in Brussels, one 8-year-old, income under the low threshold. Base: €190.23. Single-parent low-bracket supplement: + €50.73. Total: €240.96 per month for a single child, more than the Flemish base for an only child on a middle income (€184.62).
A Flemish couple with three children, €60,000 income. Base: €184.62 × 3 = €553.86. The household exceeds the Flemish “middle” ceiling for 1-2 children (€47,485) but stays under the raised ceiling for 3+ children (€76,560): supplement + €85.22 × 3. Total: €809.52 per month. In Flanders, the third child clearly pays better than the first two, at equal income.
You can test your own numbers with the calculator, which applies these scales automatically. And if you’re budgeting for a new child, factor in childcare: our article on ONE nursery fees in 2026 breaks down the income-based contribution.
The traps that cost money
Income counts, but from two years ago. Eligibility for the social supplement is assessed on your taxable gross income of N-2, via the SPF Finances fiscal feed. This year’s income changes nothing today: if your salary dropped in 2026, the effect on benefits shows up in 2028. Conversely, a lean year two years ago may open an entitlement you stopped thinking about.
In Brussels, cadastral income can block everything. Little-known condition: the total non-indexed cadastral income of the household’s built properties must not exceed €2,000. Above that, no social supplement at all, even with very low professional income. Owners of an older rental property, check this before counting on the supplement.
Your child was born before 2019-2020? Rank changes everything. Pre-reform, in Wallonia and Flanders, the amount depends on the child’s rank, and the ranking rule differs: in Wallonia, it’s the position among children still receiving benefits today; in Flanders, rank is frozen based on the household composition on 31 December 2018. The same child can be “rank 1” in one region and “rank 2” in the other, a €100 monthly difference.
BIM status overrides income. A BIM (increased reimbursement) beneficiary? The social supplement is granted independently of the income calculation, on a quarterly basis. Many eligible families never claim it because they judge their income “too high” over the rolling year.
What the scales don’t include
The amounts above cover base amounts and the social supplement. Added when you qualify: the birth or adoption allowance (one-off payment), the supplement for a child with a disability (by care tier, up to several hundred euros), orphan supplements, and in Wallonia the single-parent and large-family increases outside the social supplement. Each fund publishes its own scales, and they move with indexation: always check the amount currently in force.
Only your fund (FAMIWAL, Famiris/Iriscare or Groeipakket) can confirm your exact entitlement. The figures here help you estimate, not decide.
