Belgium VAT Chain Bug: What to Do About a Wrong Notice
9 August 2026
On 5 August 2026, the SPF Finances confirmed a technical issue in Belgium’s new VAT chain: some payments already made weren’t correctly matched to the corresponding debt in the system. That triggered automatic payment notices for the June and second-quarter 2026 periodic VAT declarations, even for people who had already paid in full. If you’re VAT-registered and just received a notice that looks wrong, here’s what’s actually going on and what to do about it.
What went wrong
Belgium rolled out a new VAT payment and reporting system this year, referred to as the “nouvelle chaîne TVA.” According to the SPF Finances, a technical fault meant certain recorded amounts weren’t properly allocated against the debt they were meant to cover. The system then automatically generated payment notices for the June and Q2 2026 periodic declarations as if nothing had been paid, even when it had.
What to actually do
There are two situations, and the right move depends on which one you’re in.
You already paid. Do nothing. The SPF Finances says payments will be credited based on their original value date, with no late-payment interest and no penalty, even though the notice makes it look like you’re behind.
You haven’t paid yet, or only partially paid. Pay what you owe as soon as possible. Waiting risks a second, updated notice once the system catches up, which just adds confusion to an already confusing situation.
The SPF Finances says its services are mobilized to regularize affected cases “as quickly as possible,” but hasn’t given a fixed resolution date.
Worth knowing during the transition
This is the kind of disruption that tends to happen while an administration migrates to a new system, and it may not be the last one tied to the VAT chain rollout. During this period, it’s worth checking your actual account status directly on MyMinFin rather than assuming a paper or email notice reflects reality.
Double-check your own numbers
If this made you want to verify your VAT figures independently of what the notice claims, our VAT calculator can check the amount due, and our invoice generator produces VAT-compliant invoices if you need to reissue anything.
